How do I get reporters to quote me in stories instead of my competitors?
Become an expert on your industry. Then, when there's an event happening that you know about, call reporters and let them know you have information they may be able to use.
"Reporters don't have time to sit down and get to know you. Get in on a specific story. Let the reporter know you have something to say," advises Newsday's Ron Roel. Make sure, he says, that you are available, easy to reach, and can explain things simply. "Too often experts get wrapped up in jargon and can't speak in less than a paragraph, making it hard to get the two-line quote that is often needed. Think in 'print bites.'"
How else can I get my company name mentioned in publications?
One of the best ways to get mentioned in publications is to write articles and get the articles published. If you are a consultant to a particular industry, for instance, try your hand at writing how-to articles on subjects related to what you do. A computer consultant might write a brief piece on how to choose a computer consultant, for instance, and submit it to the trade magazines that cater to the kind of customers he or she writes programs for.
How do I get invited to speak at association meetings or conferences?
If you are not well known enough for conference planners to seek you out, seek them out. Call and tell them what expertise you have or how your knowledge will be of interest to people attending their meetings.
Will I get paid for speaking?
If you are seeking to publicize a product or service or yourself, you probably won't get paid. On the other hand, if an organization thinks you will be a good draw for them, then you may get paid anywhere from a small honorarium to thousands of dollars for your time.
